THE FURNITURE DESIGNS PROCESS

FROM DESIGNS BY MARCUS WHITE

In order to give our discerning clients access to the most exclusive furniture designs possible, whilst meeting our principle objectives of Iconic design and exquisite beauty, Marcus White is constantly looking for and prototyping evermore cutting edge concepts that take furniture design to new levels.

At the same time, we never lose sight of the need for functionality, indeed this is paramount in the design process, thus ensuring every piece always serves its purpose superbly.  In the case that you cannot find a suitable piece from our range, you can commission a new designIt is an evolving process, we are constantly adding to and developing our limited edition furniture range, which provides unique concepts with a limit of just 100 pieces for each design.

New furniture designs are conceived from two sources:

Firstly, Marcus has his‘ Book of Concepts’.  These are ideas for single furniture pieces or entirely new concepts that can span a whole range. Secondly, we encourage you, our clients, to make suggestions about the ideas and furniture that you would like, and in cases where there is not a suitable existing piece we will work with you, and the Book, to bring one into production.  This is truly bespoke furniture.
Here is a personal statement from Marcus on the entire design process:

“I am strongly affected by the way things look.  I have intense, sometimes extreme, responses to almost all the visual data that I receive from my senses.  On a daily and continual basis I react to and assess the way things appear; with objects and scenes of beauty I wish to unlock and understand their beauty, and in a similar way I wish to understand why some things are not.  I find the most intense beauty in nature; the forms colours and movements of her plants and animals, natural materials, light and its interplay with the elements, and the perfect combination of all these elements into land and seascapes.

My man-made influences include my study of physics at Oxford and in particular quantum mechanics which expounds fantastic forms, the great designers, craftsman and architects, music, art and the engineering of anything from cars, planes and boats, to rockets, clocks, and micro engineering.  The list is endless, and the world full of inspiration.  Indeed I have travelled around the globe witnessing as much of it as possible.

The intense stream of inspiration this provides me with, and the design aspirations of myself and my clients, drives all of my furniture designs.  Each piece is carefully conceived, such that it contains at least one truly unique feature, this then is the key that unlocks the whole design. The design process is then painstakingly thought out, with 2D and 3D CAD models to check proportions, methods of construction and aesthetics. Design meetings are held with the relevant craftsmen and the final manufacturing methods are established through these discussions, experimentation and prototyping.

The last process is final manufacture, resulting in a highly engineered piece of furniture which will provide many decades, indeed centuries, of use and pleasure to my clients and their heirs.”
