Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design
The 10 day Cheltenham furniture exhibition provided the venue for the public launch of the Elliptical Rotaional Chest of Drawers. This prooved a great success, the new piece was universaly loved and widely regarded as the finest at the show.
New product - Rotational furniture
Designs by Marcus White has been commissioned by a private collector to develop two new pieces for the limited edition range. The designs proposed are for a matched pair of 12 drawer chests in Red Gum veneer, and a matching dressing table with six drawers; in both cases the concept is literally ‘revolutionary’ as all the drawers open by rotational motion, rather than linear motion. The rotational concept has created a number of very challenging design problems, all of which have now been overcome. Solutions required precision engineering, some state of the art materials, radical new construction methods and the development of completely new techniques. A third rotational chest of drawers is also being made for display at the forthcoming shows in Cheltenham and Dorset, see above for details.
Plans underway for new eco-build workshop
Due to the growth of Designs by Marcus White, the current workshop facilities have become too small to meet the growing demand for furniture manufacture. Having already expanded on the current site as far as possible a new location had to be sourced, and in January 09 a suitable site was purchased. Talks are now underway with local planners for a state of the art 30,000 ft eco-build workshop with extensive office and showroom facilities. The building construction is to be in wood, with lime rendered straw bale walls, creating a carbon negative building with high energy efficiency, and excellent sound absorption. Widespread landscaping and tree planting is also planned on the site to create a beautiful environment which reflects the area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that it is set in. Time scales are set to be in the new facility by the end of 2010, so it is with great excitement that we are all looking forward to the next decade.
